Experience God anew through our many opportunities for group Bible study, activity and discussion…
Sunday School for all ages – most Sundays at 9:15 AM (September through June)
Preschool/Kindergarten – This class uses Sola Publishing’s Alphabet Soup which is a Sunday School series designed for young students in Preschool and Kindergarten. Lessons are based on storytelling, rhyme, and pictures, and are suitable for participation by non-readers. The flexible lesson plans introduce the youngest believers to the importance and truth of God’s Word. We meet in the classroom on the left side of the hallway from the Administrative Assistant’s office.
1st Grade through 5th Grade – This class uses Sola Publishing’s Sunday Schoolhouse series focusing on the priority of God’s Word using a “one room schoolhouse” approach, allowing for children of varying ages and grade levels to meet together. This year the following will be covered: Stories from the Beginning” which covers Bible stories from the first half of the Old Testament, from Genesis through Joshua; “Stories of Prophets and Kings,” which covers Bible stories from the second half of the Old Testament, from Judges through Malachi; “Stories from Jesus’ Life” which covers Bible stories from the Gospels; and “Stories from Acts and the Letters” which covers Bible stories from the Book of Acts to the end of the New Testament. We meet in the classroom next to the fellowship hall doors.
Middle/High School – Talksheets and topical discussions
The class explores scripture while opening up the floor to discuss current issues that may affect this age group. Occasional offsite trips are made. This class meets in the last classroom on the right going down the main hallway.
Adult – At the present time we are following a DVD curriculum on the Old/New Testament that is lay led. We meet in the classroom by the kitchen for a lively discourse.
We seek to share Jr/Sr. High youth ministry with All Souls Episcopal Church and continue to promote participation in Virginia Synod and Richmond Area Lutheran Youth (RALY) events.
1. Daily Discipleship Bible Study – “Tuesdays with Pastor Carbaugh” meets on Tuesday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. in the Narthex. The discussion will initially focus on the upcoming Sunday’s scripture readings.
2. Women’s Bible Study – 2nd & 4th Tuesdays (Fall through Spring)
This lay led Bible study and discussion group meets at Messiah in our fellowship hall at 7PM. Group consensus helps determine topic and style of the gathering.
Other Youth Offerings:
1. Gospel Fun Time takes place during worship after the children’s sermon for children ages 3-10. Children complete activities that parallel the lectionary and return to their families in time for communion.
2. First Communion and Confirmation classes are offered when youth are of age.
Other Adult Offerings:
We occasionally offer online, video based classes perfect for those on the go. Each class is an independent offering led by top scholars and religious leaders. You take the class at your own pace. Offerings vary throughout the year.
2. Virginia Synod Retreats and Events for Adults
The Virginia Synod of the ELCA offers year round opportunities for spiritual growth: men’s & women’s retreats, Power in the Spirit (with dynamic speakers and musicians), ACTS classes (on varied topics led by seminary professors), and more! Learn how you can participate at VaSynod.org.
3. Financial Peace University
In a local nine-week class, you’ll learn Dave Ramsey’s seven easy-to-follow Baby Steps to create a budget, get out of debt, and make a beneficial, generous plan for your money! We plan to offer this class on a regular, reoccurring basis. Financial Peace University is a biblically based program that works.
4. Book and a Movie (BAM)
People read a given book, come together in fellowship for eating and discussion, and then conclude with viewing of the movie.
Many additional opportunities are offered throughout the year!
