In addition, Messiah will offer a Sunday morning gatherings (on and off site) for your 5th grade and up youth.
Adult Small Group
Most Sundays, Pastor Lou or lay leaders facilitate a variety of programs, book discussions, Bible studies and movies to help us help one another grow in faith. We meet in the Fellowship Hall. Examples of past topical offerings: Animate Faith Series, The Jesus I Never Knew DVD/book study, Modern Spiritual Masters (theological studies of notable modern Christians and how their spirituality might help inform our own supplemented by movies, music, books and more); “Jesus: When the time was right” (study of Galatians); “Tent of Meeting, to Temple, to Church” (a survey course about the Holy People of God and their worship from ancient Levitical times to our post-Pentecost Church today).
Current class: “Table Talk: A round table discussion about violence and weapons in the United States.” This gathering will use scripture, historic theological understandings, ELCA social statements, and modern research to help explore this issue. The gathering is meant to help empower participants to converse about the subject both thoughtfully, compassionately, and faithfully. The topic was requested by church members after a recent mass shooting incident.
During this 5 week DVD based small group Bible study, participants will explore what kind of news is good to a culture that thinks it has rejected the Christian version. In addition to hearing illuminating stories of how faith can disarm even the most cynical critics, you will discover effective ways to share grace with others in a jaded society that is often hostile to the Church. DVD host: Philip Yancey, award winning author and editor-at-large for Christianity Today magazine. Facilitator: Pastor Lou Florio
2. Daily Discipleship Bible Study – most Wednesdays at 2:00 pm
Pastor Lou facilitates a lectionary based study. We look ahead to next Sunday’s preaching text. Along with helping yourself, you’ll also help Pastor Lou prepare for Sunday’s sermon through sharing your questions, stories and insights. Come once, as available, or come each week. We meet in the narthex/welcome area of the church.
3. Men’s Bible Study – on hiatus
This lay led Bible study and discussion group has met for several years over lunch at Cracker Barrel (7367 Bell Creek Road South). Members are often joined by restaurant workers and other members of the public. It has proven a great evangelism and outreach effort. Come as you can and as you are.
4. Women’s Bible Study – 2nd & 4th Tuesdays (Fall through Spring)
This lay led Bible study and discussion group meets at Messiah in our fellowship hall or narthex as available. Group consensus helps determine topic and style of the gathering. Just drop in or contact Marilyn Gunn through our office for more information.
We occasionally offer online, video based classes perfect for those on the go. Each class is an independent offering led by top scholars and religious leaders. You take the class at your own pace. Offerings vary throughout the year.
