Christian Formation

Experience God anew through our many opportunities for group Bible study, activity and discussion…

1. Sunday School for all ages – most Sundays at 9:15 AM (September through June)

Preschool/Kindergarten – Bible stories & heroes
Students will learn about many important Bible stories and heroes through story, crafts, activities and song. We meet in the classroom next to our Administrative Assistant’s office.

1st grade through 5th Grade – Bible stories & heroes
Students will learn about many important Bible stories and heroes through story, crafts, activities and song. We meet in the classroom next to the Fellowship Hall doors.

Jr./Sr. High School Youth Group – Varied topics
Our Jr/Sr High ministry is called Fusion (our Jr./Sr. High Youth Group with All Souls Episcopal). Our youth group meets twice per month supplemented by off-site programs offered by RALY (Richmond Area Lutheran Youth), the Virginia Synod of the ELCA, the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia.

Jr./Sr. High & Adult Small Group
Most Sundays, Pastor Lou or lay leaders facilitate a variety of programs, book discussions, Bible studies and movies to help us help one another grow in faith. We meet in the Fellowship Hall. Examples of past topical offerings: Animate Faith Series, The Jesus I Never Knew DVD/book study, Modern Spiritual Masters (theological studies of notable Christians supplemented by movies, music, books and more); “Jesus: When the time was right” (study of Galatians).

Current topic: Luther Remembered — This fall, you will be exposed to (perhaps) new sides of Luther – a look at him from the Reformed tradition’s viewpoint, some of his lesser known writings and yes, even his sin.

2. Daily Discipleship Bible Study – most Wednesdays at 2:00 pm
Pastor Lou facilitates a lectionary based study. We look ahead to next Sunday’s preaching text. Along with helping yourself, you’ll also help Pastor Lou prepare for Sunday’s sermon through sharing your questions, stories and insights. Come once, as available, or come each week. We meet in the narthex/welcome area of the church.

3. Men’s Bible Study – Thursdays at 11:00 am
This lay led Bible study and discussion group meets over lunch at Cracker Barrel (7367 Bell Creek Road South). Members are often joined by restaurant workers and other members of the public. It has proven a great evangelism and outreach effort. Come as you can and as you are. Just drop in or contact Jack Ordazzo through our office for more information.

4. Women’s Bible Study – 2nd and 4th Tuesdays (Fall through Spring)
This lay led Bible study and discussion group meets at Messiah in our fellowship hall or narthex as available. Group consensus helps determine topic and style of the gathering. Just drop in or contact Marilyn Gunn through our office for more information.

5. ChurchNext
We occasionally offer online, video based classes perfect for those on the go. Each class is an independent offering led by top scholars and religious leaders. You take the class at your own pace. Offerings vary throughout the year.

6. Virginia Synod Retreats & Events for Adults
The Virginia Synod of the ELCA offers year round opportunities for spiritual growth: men’s & women’s retreats, Power in the Spirit (with dynamic speakers and musicians), ACTS classes (on varied topics led by seminary professors), and more! Learn how you can participate at VirginiaSynod.org,

7. Additional Youth Programming
Our youth program is offered in conjunction with All Souls Episcopal Church, Richmond Area Lutheran Youth (RALY), and the Virginia Synod of the ELCA. Visit our youth ministry page for details.

8. Financial Peace University
In a local nine-week class, you’ll learn Dave Ramsey’s seven easy-to-follow Baby Steps to create a budget, get out of debt, and make a plan for your money! We plan to offer this class on a regular, reoccurring basis.

Many additional opportunities are offered throughout the year!
