“With New Voices — The Catechism in the 21st Century”
The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) is inviting all of us to engage Luther’s Small Catechism in a new way. It is an invitation: 1) to hear the Lutheran witness of the Christian faith that we share from new voices — voices that perhaps we did not hear in our earlier faith experiences; and 2) to be renewed in our own voices as we join in the witness of the whole Christian community for the world. At Messiah, we will renew our focus on our catechism and confessions throughout summer and the fall to help us mark the 500th anniversary of the start of the Reformation. Pick up your free copy of the Small Catechism while supplies last, and/or sign-up to purchase our Lutheran confessions, the Book Of Concord, for your home. Here’s our schedule for summer worship:
June 18 – Baptism at 10:45 am
June 25 – Lord’s Supper at 10:45 am
July – We will worship with All Souls Episcopal at 9:30 am
*Includes July 30th Service Day!
*Following Revised Common Lectionary
August 6 – First Article of the Creed (God the Father) at 10:45 am
August 13 – Second Article of the Creed (Jesus) at 10:45 am
August 20 – Third Article of the Creed (the Holy Spirit & Church) at 10:45 am
August 27 – The Lord’s Prayer at 10:45 am
Meet our Bishop-Elect
On Sunday, June 11, 2017, the Virginia Synod of the ELCA elected a new bishop, the Rev. Bob Humphries (Muhlenberg Lutheran in Harrisonburg). You can learn about him through this link: Bishop-Elect, the Rev. Bob Humphrey.
Monthly “500 Years of the Reformation” Speaker Series
Messiah Lutheran, All Souls Episcopal and several other Hanover County congregations have banded together to offer this wonderful speaker series to all our neighbors. The seven gatherings will move from congregation to congregation and each will have a different topic and speaker. To learn more about this speaker series or find additional resources on the anniversary of the Reformation, visit our Reformation 500 page.
Traveling Martin Luther
As Lent begins, our children have been offered a cardboard, standing Martin Luther figure to accompany them during Lent and through Reformation Sunday 2017, the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. Youth will be encouraged (with the help of parents) to take pictures with (or of) their Martin Luther in varied places and perhaps unusual spaces. Humor and creativity are not only allowed but encouraged. Then, send digital copies to Pastor Lou for posting on a special site. Council will select their favorite picture for a special prize. Each month, participating families will receive additional items to help their children grow in the knowledge of Martin Luther and the Reformation, but hopefully in faith as well.
